Description

This is an ornately moulded cast-iron milepost in Gothic style, located outside the Western Cemetery. It is part of a series along the A48 to the west of Cardiff. The milepost features a rectangular panel at the base inscribed with 'MICHAELSTONE PARISH', although the date panel is hidden. Above this, there is a tall crowning tablet with a curved head, inscribed with 'CARDIFF DISTRICT'. The lower part of this tablet has two pointed-headed panels; the left panel is inscribed 'TO CARDIFF 4', and the right panel is inscribed 'TO COWBRIDGE 8'. Additionally, there is a further inscription 'LONDON 162' located below these panels and above the rectangular panel at the base.
