Description
The Catholic Church of St Francis of Assisi is a 20th-century building featuring a west front constructed from faced but entirely random limestone rubble, with some rendering on part of the gable. The remaining walls are rendered, likely over blockwork, and the main roof is tiled, while the dormers have copper roofs. The church has a reinforced concrete frame, although this is not visible externally except in the tower.
The layout includes a west entrance leading into the main church through a narthex, with a vestry and clergy rooms to the north-east, meeting rooms and confessionals to the south, and a tower to the south-west. The west elevation showcases a wide gable above an open porch supported by four piloti on the left, with a blind wall on the right that features a concrete sculpture by Adam Kossowski depicting St. Francis's vision of Christ on the Cross. The central doorway is framed in concrete but is not aligned with the porch. Above the porch, the gable is rendered and has a series of square windows arranged in a 3:2:2:1 pattern leading up to the apex. To the right stands a square, tapering open campanile with five stages. The south elevation has two steep dormers but is otherwise plain. The north elevation features three windows rising into steep dormers, a porch on the right, and a priest's door on the left. The east elevation includes a low wrap-around storey with tall windows above on either side that light the sanctuary, while the east wall is blind.
Inside, the church boasts a highly theatrical interior that remains unaltered and is characteristic of its period. The wide-span roof is supported by a concrete cantilever frame, with a gallery on three sides positioned between the inner and outer supports. The gallery consists of three bays, with a straight front between the first two bays and then canted around the west end, above the narthex. The doorways are in a plain Egyptian style, and the chancel arch allows dramatic side lighting to the sanctuary. Stations of the Cross are displayed on the gallery frontal.
