Description
Mount Stuart Graving Dock No.1 is a dry dock that measures approximately 130 meters long and 22 meters wide. The sea walls of the dock are constructed from massive blocks of grey-brown stone, topped with granite copings. The stepped walls of the dock, which are not quite parallel, are made of finely-jointed snecked reddish stone, with some repairs and alterations done in concrete. There are two sets of steps built into the northeast wall and one set in the southwest wall, each with metal handrails. The northwest end of the dock extends beneath a concrete bridge. The outer end of the dock is raised above the main dock area, featuring concrete flooring. The dock gates are made of metal and clad in vertical boarding on the seaward side, complete with a depth scale and a railed wooden walkway. These gates are operated by chains that are pulled by manual cast-iron winches, which have plate metal housings about one meter high on each side of the dock entrance. On the northeast side of the entrance, there are capstans and bollards, with an additional row of capstans and bollards located approximately six meters from the dockside, parallel to the northeast side of the dock.
