Description

Nos. 3 and 4 Castle Hill are a pair of houses with distinct architectural features, dating from the 18th century. They have lower eaves and ridge levels compared to Nos. 1 and 2. The walls are made of local rubblestone, with the front walls featuring red brick dressings and a colourwashed finish. Both houses have thatched roofs with eyebrow dormers and follow a two-storey, single-depth plan with small rear wings. Each house consists of two window bays flanking a central door bay.

In the front wall of each house, there is a door with a canopy on the right side, and to the left, a two-light casement window above a three-light casement window below, both with diamond panes, a change made in the late 20th century. Each house also has a pair of diamond-set brick chimney stacks, likely added around 1855. The original rear walls remain, featuring small rectangular window openings, while the rear wings, which have slate roofs, were added in the mid to late 19th century.

The wall of No. 4 curves at the corner and includes a stone kneeler and coping at the gable end. The previous listing notes a blocked mullioned window in the rear wall and a ground-level window opening, but these were not observed during the recent survey. The interior was not inspected at that time, but earlier descriptions mention a possibly 16th-century stone doorway within No. 4.
