Description

Stable Court at St Fagans Castle is a building that consists of three wings constructed with local stone rubble walls, Welsh slate roofs, and red brick stacks featuring tall ribbed shafts. These wings are arranged around three sides of a courtyard.

The Eastern Wing is topped with a clock and an octagonal cupola. Its eastern elevation faces Castle Hill and includes two gabled dormers, a rebuilt external chimney, a segmental arched doorway, and a flat arched window. Facing the courtyard, it has a 2-light wood casement window with 6 + 6 pane margin lights on the first floor, along with two mullion-and-transom windows and a doorway on the ground floor, all featuring flat stone heads with small voussoirs.

The Southern Wing's courtyard elevation has a loft door and a small 6 + 6 pane casement window with a stone head on the first floor. The ground floor includes two wide doorways, one small doorway, and three mullion-and-transom windows.

The Western Wing's courtyard elevation features two small 2-light casements with 6 + 6 small panes on the first floor, while the ground floor has two wide doorways, a house doorway, and a 2-light casement with small panes.

A wide stone archway with a segmental head and an embattled parapet connects the northern gable of the eastern stable wing to the outer boundary wall of the castle. The north-west end of the western wing is attached to the medieval castle wall, and its western elevation is positioned on a steep slope that overlooks the cottages on Castle Hill. The upper floor features four 2-light casement windows with flat heads, along with three similar windows in the south gable end.

The building was not inspected during the resurvey.
