Description

22 and 23 St Peter's Hill are a pair of houses believed to date from around 1850, located in Lower Brixham. They have solid rendered walls, with the left side wall made of painted stone rubble, and a hipped slated roof. A rendered chimney is situated on the ridge above the party wall. The houses have a double-depth plan; No. 22 is one room wide, while No. 23 is two rooms wide with a central entrance passage that leads to a rear staircase. The buildings are three storeys high and feature two and three windows wide, respectively.

Both houses have round-arched doorways with patterned fanlights and six-panelled doors, with the bottom panels of No. 23 being flush. No. 23 also has an old iron knocker in the form of a ring. The windows are barred sash style, with six over six panes in the ground and second storeys, and three over six panes in the third storey. They also have a deep, flat eaves-cornice.

The interior of No. 23 has been partly inspected and features a highly unusual geometric wooden staircase that rises the full height of the house in a tight spiral, with thin square balusters and treads that have moulded nosings. The house also includes panelled shutters and doors, a moulded cornice in the entrance passage, and enriched brackets supporting the arch leading to the staircase.
