Description

Cyncoed Methodist Church is a small-scale religious building characterized by its cubic simplicity, influenced by the International Modern style of Mies van der Rohe, who passed away in 1969. The church features a rectilinear design with clear-span trusses and walls made of coursed yellow brick, which are evenly divided by uPVC glazing. The building has a plain parapet with sheet cladding, a vertical panel of replaced glazing, and a symbolic crucifix on the left side, while the right side has a full-height glazed entrance bay. The original glazing includes simple metal transoms and mullions, and there are metal piers supporting a simple canopy over plain timber doors. Each yellow brick flank has six vertical panels of replaced glazing, and a lower Fellowship Hall is attached at the rear.

Inside, the spacious, clear-span interior consists of five bays with a white-boarded ceiling that is divided by black perforated bands containing light units. Pairs of yellow brick pilasters flank the vertical windows, emphasizing the bay divisions in the white longitudinal walls. A white full-height reredos with a symbolic wooden crucifix stands out from the yellow brick of the main east wall, with a railed area for the communion table below the crucifix. Rectilinear wooden furniture, including a reading desk and pulpit, is positioned to the left. The entrance wall contains a lateral vestibule with a full-height glazed screen, a cloakroom, a toilet, and a cantilevered staircase leading to a soundproof crying room.
