Description

Church of St John the Evangelist is a church constructed between 1958 and 1960, designed by Peter Bosanquet. The exterior is characterized by yellow brick for the end walls and banded pink and brown brick for the side walls. The steeply pitched roof is tiled and features white-painted weatherboarded eaves. The roof ridge slopes upwards towards the east, although the church itself faces west. The building is a rectangular room church, with the sanctuary raised on a step, and the altar further elevated by two steps. A choir gallery occupies the west end, housing the organ, with vestries and an entrance situated below. The asymmetrical entrance is sheltered by a shallow, painted concrete canopy, leading to timber doors set within a timber and glass screen. A cross pattern is incorporated into the chocolate-colored brick headers on the west gable. The east wall features a pattern of vertical slits filled with blue, turquoise, and red glass, forming a cross with clear glass. Both the east and west walls are canted backwards, curving asymmetrically. Windows are recessed in the roof on the north and south sides.

Inside, the layout is asymmetrical, with an aisle to the left of centre and pews canted inwards on the left side. The roof consists of broad, boarded trusses, exposed at the east end and along the north and south walls to reveal the upper and lower walls with natural lighting, partially concealed and entering on the north side via circular rooflights. Portions of the trusses are concealed by varnished plywood, with slatted areas in front of additional windows on the north side. The east end features exposed white brickwork and render, while the north and south walls exhibit exposed white brickwork with chocolate header decoration, and are slightly battered. The altar is positioned off-centre to the right, accompanied by timber sedilia to the right and a pulpit, lectern, and reading desk to the left, all crafted from light timber. The font consists of a smooth stone bowl with a matt gold-coloured lid on three boomerang-shaped supports, and is unusually located on the northeast side. Altar rails and pews are made of blond wood. The asymmetrical west gallery is divided vertically, with one half panelled in varnished plywood featuring vertical slits for organ pipes, partially painted in a dark colour to display the pipes. A slender timber balustrade completes the gallery's design.

This is an attractive and subtly detailed church, serving as a prominent landmark. The arrangement of the altar, font, pulpit, and lectern demonstrates an early, imaginative response to the liturgical movement. A parsonage is not included in the listing.
