Description
Bethel Baptist Church is a two-storey building with a symmetrical front elevation, dating from the 19th century. It features pebbledash cladding with smooth render quoins and a pyramidal asbestos pantile roof. The front has three bays with round-headed openings and a rendered cill band on the first floor. The sash windows have glazing bars and 'Gothick' tracery in the heads, with three windows on the first floor having 6 over 6 panes, and two on the ground floor with 6 over 9 panes, positioned one on each side of a central doorway. This doorway has a fanlight with similar tracery and double 19th-century doors, each with three panels. The rear elevation has two similar windows with 6 over 9 panes, while the side elevation facing the street is blind.
Attached to the south-east is a single-storey schoolroom wing with a slate roof and a stone stack. The front wall of this wing has a sash window that is three panes wide on each side of a central modern boarded door.
The interior was not available for resurvey, but it is reported to have a plain plaster ceiling with a rose, a gallery supported by iron columns, a moulded panel soffit, and a low balustrade with straight wood uprights. There is a high seat on the north wall between the two windows and contemporary hat pegs. Inside the schoolroom, there is a fireplace with a plain wood surround at the south-east end and a 6-panel door at the north-west end leading into the chapel.
