Description
The Old Swan Inn is a two-storey public house built with roughly squared limestone rubble walls and a Welsh slate roof. It features stone stacks at both ends and in the center, which have weathered tops and coping on the gable ends. Originally, the building was fully rendered, but now only part of the back wall retains this finish. The structure is L-shaped, with a modern lean-to addition at the angle of the L.
The front elevation, viewed from the west, includes a three-light stone mullioned window on the ground floor, which has arched heads to the lights, spandrels, and a dripstone. Above it, there is a two-light mullioned window on the first floor. There is also a doorway with an arched head made of stone voussoirs, and a blocked single light oblong window above it. Additionally, a projecting bay window features three shallow stone steps that act as a mounting block against its west return. The front wall of this bay has a three-light mullioned window with a dripstone on both the ground and first floors, with the first-floor window topped by a gable. Each return of the bay window has a round-headed single light chamfered window. The area in front of the inn is paved with cobbled setts. At the east end, there is a modern flat-roofed projection, and the property is enclosed by stone boundary walls.
At the west end, there is a lower single-storey and attic wing, which also has a gabled roof, but its ridge is significantly lower than that of the main range. The west elevation of the north rear wing features a chamfered stone doorway to the north and a lean-to with modern windows to the right.
During the resurvey, only the ground floor was accessible. The original internal layout has been altered. The east room contains three stopped and chamfered beams with two layers of mortise holes, and the east beam is supported on a stone corbel. The joists are scratched, and the north wall of this room has two arched chamfered doorways. There is a fireplace with stone stopped and chamfered jambs. The left-hand doorway leads to a stone mural stair with paired doorways at the top. The roof structure is an A-frame with two tiers of purlins. The interior is extensively illustrated and described in the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales documentation.
