Description
The Sliding Bridge at the north entrance to the Basin, built in 1889, is a Grade II* listed structure made of riveted metal plates. It operates by sliding forwards on tracks, which are controlled by a horizontal wheel located beneath the bridge and powered by a hydraulic winch. The base of the bridge features I-beam girders, and to the west, there is a mechanism designed to engage with the dock wall. The sides of the bridge consist of metal plates supported by girders and struts, curving down towards the west end. At the east end, the bridge includes counterweights and has maker's plates indicating it was manufactured by the Darlington Wagon and Engineering Co Ltd in 1889.
