Description

Jackson's Bridge is a Grade II listed single-span footbridge constructed with riveted wrought-iron girders, steel arch struts, cast-iron piers, timber decking, and a stone sett approach ramp. The bridge features a pair of riveted wrought-iron through trusses, made up of composite stringers (the bottom chords) and upper girder beams (the top chords), which are riveted together using flange and soffit plates to achieve a span of 30.48 meters (100 feet).

The stringers and upper girder beams are connected by pairs of struts riveted to gusset plates, forming triangular panels. The lattice parapets and handrails are made from flat riveted wrought-iron bars. The upper beams of the trusses are bent over to create braced ends that rest on round section cast-iron piers embedded in the river banks. The two trusses are further connected by floor beams and five round arch steel struts. One of the south-western arch struts features an inscription in relief that reads "E.T. BELLHOUSE AND CO MANCHESTER 1881."

The floor beams are reinforced with screw tensioned lateral wind bracing bars arranged in a criss-cross pattern beneath the decking. The decking planks are supported by the inner flanges of the stringers and secured with transverse wrought-iron creep plates, with timber kerbs attached to the decking. Each end of the bridge is accessed by a short wrought-iron arched ramp, built similarly to the bridge but half the height of the trusses, with the upper girder beams serving as the handrail. The south-western ramp connects directly to the western river bank and is approached by a stone sett ramp from Rifle Road. The north-eastern ramp ends at a modern concrete cycle and disabled access ramp, which is set at a right angle to the bridge and is not included in the listing.
