Description
The Chorlton War Memorial is located in the churchyard of Chorlton Methodist Church, positioned in a grassy area to the left of the footpath. Constructed from granite, the memorial features a four-sided column topped with a Celtic cross. This column is mounted on a small square plinth, which is inscribed with the dates 1914-1918. Below this, there are two additional inscribed plinths; the upper one is four-sided with a slight narrowing at the top, creating a sloping effect, while the base plinth is larger and square in shape.
The column and the small front plinth bear the inscription: "TO / THE GLORY OF / GOD / AND / IN MEMORY OF THOSE FROM OUR CHURCH AND SCHOOL WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1918 / (NAMES)." The front of the bottom plinth is inscribed with "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE."
Names of those who died in the First World War are recorded on the left side of the memorial, while the names of those who died in the Second World War are inscribed on the right side. The bottom plinth also carries the inscription "FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH."
