Description

The former Barry Docks Offices, now occupied by Associated British Ports, were constructed in the late 19th century, displaying a Neo-Baroque/Wrenaissance style. The building is three storeys high with a basement, presenting symmetrical elevations dominated by a central clock tower. The exterior is faced with Portland stone on the ground floor, with similar stone dressings above a brick base. The roof is hipped and slate, featuring brick chimney stacks.

The main front has eleven bays, with particular emphasis on the ends and centre. The middle five bays are advanced, and the central three project further, topped by a dated triangular pediment. The end bays are similarly advanced, each with a segmental pediment. Giant order composite columns and pilasters, exhibiting entasis (pilasters at the ends, columns in the centre), rise through the upper floors, supported by an overall dentil cornice. Sill bands frame four-pane sash windows, while cambered keyblocked architraves are found on the second floor, and bracketed, pedimented architraves on the first floor, with alternating segmental pediments in the centre. The three tall central windows open onto segmental curved balconies with distinctive bulbous stone balustrades; blind balustraded aprons are incorporated into the end windows. The ground floor is rusticated around a round-arched entrance featuring deep concave jambs, with double doors surmounted by a traceried fanlight. Steps leading to the building rise over a basement yard, delineated by swept parapets and panelled square piers with semi-circular caps. The basement itself is constructed of snecked rubble.

The side elevations echo the front, arranged in a 2+3+2 bay configuration, with an advanced central section topped by segmental pediments inscribed "BR". Composite columns flank the central bay on both sides, supporting a balustraded balcony. An E side feature is a chimney-like stone finial above the pediment. A double-doored entrance is located to the left of centre, adorned by square piers supporting the parapet walls, alongside a war memorial tablet. The rear of the building is T-shaped and comparatively lacking in detail, however, a central toilet projection is distinguished by its pyramidal roof and louvred ventilator.

The octagonal inner porch is panelled, with half-glazed sides, mirrored by a similar fanlight above the inner doors which are distinguished by fine, sinuous Art Nouveau brass handles. A long, central hall extends to a stone double return staircase. The upper flights of the staircase are cantilevered, leading to an ironwork balustrade featuring circular foliage and fruit trails, a latticed base, s-shaped tread ends, panelled metal newels (octagonal at the base), and a wooden handrail. A bronze bust of Edward Davies, son of David Davies and former managing director of the BD & R Co, is situated on the half landing, surrounded by lugged architraves. Circular windows are positioned near the foot of the stairs. To the left and right of the hall, rooms are arranged around square-planned corridors. A former manager's office is wainscotted, while the board room is described as being similar. The interior suffered damage from a fire in 1984.
