Description

The Operator's Cabin to the Sliding Bridge is a Grade II listed building, likely built around 1889 and designed as a standard pattern wooden signal box for the Barry Railway. It is believed to be the last of its type. The cabin is positioned parallel to the bridge, featuring gabled ends to the east and west. It is constructed of wood with horizontal boarding and has a slate roof, while the basement is made of brick.

Notable architectural features include decorative bargeboards and some panelling on the gable ends. The eastern end has wooden steps leading up to the entrance doorway, with three windows on each side at the operator's level. There are balconies on three sides supported by iron brackets and fitted with metal rails. A doorway on the southern side leads to the ground floor, with steps descending to a basement doorway below. Attached to the western side of the cabin is a small wooden hut with vertical boarding and a hipped slate roof, which houses a mechanism, possibly a hydraulic cylinder.

Inside the operator's cabin, the original lever frame mechanism is intact, featuring seven levers along with an additional adjacent lever.
