Description

One of a double row of terraced houses facing each other across pavements, road, and a narrow green. The houses were built in pairs, each with a door to the side, one window above, and one to the ground floor. They share a central stack and roofline, with stepped rooflines necessary to accommodate the rising ground between pairs. The houses are built of roughly dressed ironstone with snecked (irregularly embedded) stones, with each opening bordered by large stones and massive single lintels. Some stacks are built with brick. Originally with Welsh slate roofs, most have now been replaced with concrete tiles, and feature blue brick ridge tiles. Windows were originally 8/8 pane sashes, and a few remain; later adaptations include some horned sashes, though most glazing is now late 20th-century PVC-U. Original openings and deep sills remain unaltered. The rear elevations originally had similar glazing and, according to an OS Map of 1875, had no rear extensions, although these are now common. There are few dividing fences between properties, but each double plot originally had a separate stone and slate WC (water closet) and coal shed at the end, many of which survive in adapted form. At each terrace end, except for the southeastern end, is a later house that varies from the standard pattern.
