1-26 Park Terrace (consec)

One of a double row of terraced houses facing each other across pavements, the road, and a narrow green. The houses were built in pairs, each with a door to the side, one window above, and one to the ground floor, sharing a central stack and roofline. The roofline steps accommodate the rising ground between each pair. The houses are constructed of roughly dressed ironstone, with each opening bordered by large stones and massive single lintels. Brick is used for the stacks. Originally covered with Welsh slate roofs, most are now replaced with concrete tiles, with blue brick ridge tiles. The original windows were 8/8 pane sashes, a few of which remain; later adaptations include some horned sashes. Most windows now have late 20th-century PVC-U glazing, but original openings and deep sills remain unaltered. The rear elevations originally had similar glazing and, according to an Ordnance Survey map from 1875, featured no rear extensions, although these are now common. There are few dividing fences between properties, but a separate stone and slate WC and coal shed are located at the end of each double plot, many of which remain in adapted form. A house differing from the standard pattern exists at each terrace end except for the southeast end.
