1-26 Park Terrace (consec)

One of a double row of terraced housing facing each other across pavements, road, and a narrow green. The houses were built in pairs, each with a door to the side, one window above, and one to the ground floor, sharing a central stack and roofline. Steps are incorporated into the roofline to adjust for the rising ground between pairs. The houses are constructed of roughly dressed ironstone, with each opening bordered by large stones and massive single lintels. Brick is used for the stacks. Originally, the roofs were covered with Welsh slate, though most are now replaced with concrete tiles, with blue brick ridge tiles. The original windows were 8/8 pane sashes, with a few still remaining; later adaptations include some horned sashes. Most of the glazing has been replaced with late 20th-century PVC-U, but the original openings and deep sills remain unaltered. The rear elevations originally had similar glazing and, according to an 1875 Ordnance Survey map, had no rear extensions, though these are now common. There are few dividing fences between properties, but at the end of each double plot, a separate stone and slate WC and coal shed were originally present, and many of these survive in adapted form. At each terrace end, except for the southeast end, is a later house that differs from the standard pattern.
