Description

One of a double row of terraced housing facing each other across pavements, road and a narrow green. The houses were built in pairs, each featuring a side door, one window above, and one to the ground floor, with a shared central stack and roofline. The roofline steps reflect the rising ground between the pairs. The houses are constructed of snecked roughly dressed ironstone, with each opening bordered by large stones and massive single lintels. Brick has been used for the stacks. Originally covered with Welsh slate roofs, most are now replaced with concrete tiles, with blue brick ridge tiles. The windows were originally 8/8 pane sashes, and a few remain; later adaptations include some horned sashes. Most glazing is now late 20th century PVC-U, although the original openings and deep sills remain unaltered. The rear elevations originally featured similar glazing and a 1875 Ordnance Survey map shows no rear extensions, though these are now common. Few dividing fences exist between properties. A stone and slate WC and coal shed were originally located at the end of each double plot, and many survive in adapted form. A later house, varying from the standard pattern, is located at each terrace end except the southeast end.
