Description
The Calcining Kilns at Tondu Ironworks, which are listed as Grade II*, consist of a bank of seven kilns that are connected at the back to a ramped approach bank used for charging the kilns. The kilns are constructed from coursed stone rubble, with some areas featuring dressed stone and yellow brick dressings, along with patches of red brick. At ground level, there are semi-circular openings that are framed by two rows of brick voussoirs. The funnel-shaped chambers inside have brick arched vaults and stone walls. The corner of the bank showcases dressed quoins, and there is a protruding course of dressed stone above the openings. On the left side and at the rear, there is a plinth and a blocked stone and brick arch. The attached ramp, which is buttressed, is heavily overgrown with vegetation, making its features difficult to identify.
