Description
One of a double row of terraced housing facing each other across pavements, road and a narrow green. The houses were built in pairs, each with a door to the side, one window above and one to the ground floor, and a shared central stack and roofline. The roofline steps are necessary to accommodate the rising ground between pairs. The houses are built of snecked roughly dressed ironstone, with each opening bordered by large stones and massive single lintels. Some stacks are finished with brick. Originally, the roofs were Welsh slate, though most are now replaced with concrete tiles, topped with blue brick ridge tiles. The windows were originally 8/8 pane sashes; a few remain, although later adaptations include some horned sashes. Most glazing is now late 20th century PVC-U, however original openings and deep sills remain unaltered. The rear elevations originally had similar glazing, shown on an Ordnance Survey Map of 1875 without any rear outshuts, although these are now common. Few dividing fences exist between properties. A separate stone and slate WC and coal shed were originally located at the end of each double plot, and many of these survive in adapted form. At each terrace end, except for the southeast end, is a later house that varies from the standard pattern.
