Description
One of a double row of terraced housing facing each other across pavements, road and a narrow green. The houses were built in pairs, each with a door to the side, one window above, and one to the ground floor, sharing a central stack and roofline. The roofline steps accommodate the rising ground between the pairs. The houses are constructed of snecked roughly dressed ironstone, with each opening bordered by large stones and massive single lintels, and some brick to the stacks. Originally they had Welsh slate roofs, though most are now replaced with concrete tiles, with blue brick ridge tiles. The original windows were 8/8 pane sashes, a few of which remain; later adaptations include horned sashes. Most of the glazing has been replaced with late 20th-century PVC-U, although the original openings and deep sills remain unaltered. The rear elevations originally had similar glazing and, according to an OS Map from 1875, had no rear outshuts, though these are now common. There are few dividing fences between the properties. Each double plot originally had a separate stone and slate WC and coal shed at the end, and many of these survive in adapted form. At each terrace end, except for the southeast end, is a later house that varies from the standard pattern.
