Description
One of a double row of terraced housing facing each other across pavements, road, and a narrow green. The houses were built in pairs with a door to the side, one window above, and one to the ground floor, sharing a central stack and roofline. The stepped roofline accommodates the rising ground between the pairs. The houses are built of snecked roughly dressed ironstone, with each opening bordered by large stones and massive single lintels, and brick to the stacks. Originally covered with Welsh slate roofs, most are now replaced with concrete tiles, with blue brick ridge tiles. The original windows were 8/8 pane sashes, of which a few remain; later adaptations include some horned sashes. Most glazing is now late 20th century PVC-U, although original openings and deep sills are unaltered. Rear elevations originally had similar glazing and are shown on an Ordnance Survey map of 1875 without rear outshuts, though these are now common. Few dividing fences exist between properties, but separate stone and slate WCs and coal sheds are located at the end of each double plot, many of which survive in adapted form. A later house varying from the standard pattern is located at each terrace end, except for the southeastern end.
