Description

One of a double row of terraced housing facing each other across pavements, road, and a narrow green. The houses were built in pairs, each with a door to the side, one window above, and one to the ground floor, sharing a central stack and roofline. The roofline steps accommodate the rising ground level between pairs of houses. The houses are constructed of snecked roughly dressed ironstone, with each opening bordered by large stones and massive single lintels. Stacks are faced with brick. Originally roofed with Welsh slate, most roofs are now covered with concrete tiles, with blue brick ridge tiles. The windows were originally 8/8 pane sashes, and a few survive; there are also later horned sashes. Most glazing has been replaced with late 20th-century PVC-U, although the original openings and deep sills remain unaltered. The rear elevations originally featured similar glazing and, according to an OS Map of 1875, had no rear outshuts, though these are now common. There are few dividing fences between properties, but at the end of each double plot there is typically a stone and slate WC and coal shed, many of which survive in adapted form. At each terrace end, except for the southeast end, there is a later house that deviates from the standard pattern.
