1-26 Park Terrace (consec)

One of a double row of terraced houses facing each other across pavements, road and a narrow green. The houses were built in pairs, each with a door to the side, one window above and one to the ground floor, sharing a central stack and roofline. The roofline steps accommodate the rising ground between the pairs. The houses are constructed of roughly dressed ironstone with a “snecked” finish, with each opening bordered by large stones and massive single lintels, with some brickwork to the stacks. Originally roofed in Welsh slate, most roofs are now covered in concrete tiles with blue brick ridge tiles. The original windows were 8/8 pane sashes, and a few remain; later adaptations include some horned sashes. Most glazing has been replaced with late 20th-century PVC-U, but the original openings and deep sills remain unaltered. The rear elevations originally had similar glazing and are depicted on a map of 1875 without any rear extensions, which are now common. There are few dividing fences between properties, but there is a separate stone and slate WC and coal shed at the end of each double plot – many of these survive in adapted form. At the end of each terrace, except for the southeast end, is a later house that differs from the standard pattern.
