Description
One of a double row of terraced houses facing each other across pavements, road, and a narrow green. The houses were built in pairs, featuring a door to the side of each pair, one window above the door, and one window to the ground floor. Each pair shares a central stack and roofline, with stepped sections in the roofline necessary to accommodate the rising ground between pairs. The houses are constructed of snecked, roughly dressed ironstone, with each opening bordered by large stones and massive single lintels. Brick is used for the stacks. Originally roofed with Welsh slate, most roofs are now covered with concrete tiles, with blue brick ridge tiles. The windows were originally 8/8 pane sashes, some of which remain. Later modifications include horned sashes, although most glazing is now late 20th-century PVC-U, while original openings and deep sills remain unaltered. The rear elevations originally mirrored the front with similar glazing, and an Ordnance Survey map from 1875 shows no rear extensions, though these are now common. Few dividing fences separate the properties. At the end of each double plot, there is a separate stone and slate WC and coal shed, many of which survive in altered form. The ends of the terrace, except for the southeast end, feature later houses that differ from the standard pattern.
