Description

One of a double row of terraced houses facing each other across pavements, road, and a narrow green. The houses were built in pairs with a door to the side, one window above, and one to the ground floor, sharing a central stack and roofline. Steps are incorporated into the roofline to account for the rising ground between each pair. The houses are built of roughly dressed ironstone, with large stones bordering each opening and massive single lintels, with brick detailing to the stacks. Originally covered with Welsh slate roofs, most are now replaced with concrete tiles, featuring blue brick ridge tiles. The windows were originally 8/8 pane sashes, a few of which remain; later additions include some horned sashes, and most glazing is now late 20th-century PVC-U, although original openings and deep sills are unaltered. The rear elevations originally featured similar glazing and, according to an 1875 Ordnance Survey map, contained no rear extensions, though these are now common. Few dividing fences exist between properties. At the end of each double plot are a stone and slate WC and coal shed, many of which survive in adapted form. At each terrace end, except for the southeast end, is a later house that differs from the standard pattern.
