Description
One of a double row of terraced houses facing each other across pavements, road, and a narrow green. The houses were built in pairs, each featuring a door to the side, one window above, and one to the ground floor, with a shared central stack and roofline. The roofline steps accommodate the rising ground between the pairs. They are built of snecked roughly dressed ironstone, with each opening bordered by large stones and massive single lintels, and some brickwork to the stacks. Originally, the roofs were covered with Welsh slate, although most are now replaced with concrete tiles, topped with blue brick ridge tiles. The windows were originally 8/8 pane sashes, and a few of these remain; later adaptations include some horned sashes, though most glazing is now late 20th-century PVC-U. The original openings and deep sills remain unaltered. The rear elevations originally had similar glazing, and an 1875 Ordnance Survey map shows no rear outshuts, though these are now common. There are few dividing fences between properties, but at the end of each double plot, a stone and slate WC and coal shed survive, often in adapted form. At each terrace end, except for the south-eastern end, there is a later house that varies from the standard pattern.
