Description
The War Memorial features a bronze statue mounted on a granite pedestal, surrounded by a precinct and steps. The pedestal has a moulded cap and base, along with a stepped plinth. Atop the pedestal is a statue of an infantryman, sculpted by Gaffin of Regent Street, London, depicted with a bowed head and a rifle pointing to the ground. The pedestal includes a roll of honour engraved in black letters. The front of the base displays a bronze trophy featuring a crossed rifle and sword sheath with a wreath in the center, while the back showcases another bronze trophy consisting of an anchor, rope, telescope, and chart, also with a wreath. Additional bronze plaques on the remaining sides list the war dead from 1939-45.
The pavement around the statue has been renewed and is set into a bank with coursed rock-faced revetment walls topped with ashlar coping. The side walls are ramped and extend outward to flank the original approach steps, although the current approach steps and their balustrades were added after 1945. These later additions are made of reconstituted stone and consist of steps with flanking balustrades that end with square piers. The balustrades return outward at the front, with rusticated pilasters flanking panels engraved with the dates of the two wars. Beyond these features are rock-faced walls that end in a square pier on the right side and connect to a segmental-arched doorway with double boarded doors leading to Sturn Lodge at 150a Neath Road on the left side.
