Description
The War Memorial Gates, built around 1921, were established as part of the purchase of the Gnoll Estate Grounds, which became a Memorial Park dedicated to the First World War (1914-1918). This impressive structure features sweeping concave memorial walls with gates at the center, reflecting the influence of Sir Edwin Lutyens.
Constructed from white marble with a stone plinth, the gates are framed by broad piers at the outer corners, which have simply moulded caps. The piers have sunk panels with stone plaques: one on the left commemorating the 1914-1918 war and another on the right for 1939-1945. The flanking walls curve inward towards the gateways, each adorned with three bronze plaques.
The central double gateway is flanked by tall piers that display deep bronze plaques, while the pedestrian gates on either side have similar lower piers and sunk panels. The gates themselves are elaborately designed with heavy ironwork, featuring closely set rods and gilded scrollwork on the lock and top rails, along with exuberant cresting at the top. Each gate includes a bronze medallion displaying civic insignia, and the pedestrian gates exhibit similar decorative details.
