Description
The Masonic Temple, built in 1848, features an unusual two-storey facade with five bays, showcasing classical design elements. The building is constructed of snecked masonry with regular stressed quoins and a plinth, and it has colourwashed ashlar dressings. A stylised entablature with a band resembling modillions sits atop the facade. The central section is highlighted by a shaped gablet, which has a round-arched hoodmould above a medallion displaying an oculus motif.
The outer bays of the facade are slightly advanced, while the central bays are defined by tall round arches that are recessed, complete with ashlar keystones and impost blocks. The centre bay is flanked by ashlar pilasters that rise to capitals derived from the Ionic order, positioned beneath the gablet. Medallions are set into the arches, featuring detached scrolls below that bear the inscription "ERECTED AD 1848." Masonic symbols, including spheres and calipers, are also depicted in the medallions.
The ground floor arches are topped with cambered stone lintels that have stressed keystones, and the walls ramp inwards underneath. There is a recessed doorway located in the right-hand archway only.
