Description

The Limekiln at Cwrt Herbert is a single circular limekiln that stands at nearly full height. It features massive walls made of limestone set on a splayed plinth. Inside the kiln chamber, the walls are lined with red sandstone, and there is a fire-bar located at the base. There is a draw-arch on the northwest side, which includes a surviving floor and a draw-hole at the rear. On the northeast side, there is a recess that appears to be the draw-arch of an earlier kiln; the thick northern wall now serves as a retaining structure and seems to respect this former opening. The kiln was charged from the higher ground to the south, where the limestone was quarried. It has been recently restored.
