Description

The Blue Boar Inn Public House is a two-storey building with coursed rubble elevations and plinths, dating from the 17th century. It features four windows facing Castle Street, one window on the corner facing down Church Street, and three windows on the splayed back cross range in Oxford Road. The roof is covered with slate and has wide boarded eaves, hipped at the front, along with cement rendered chimney stacks at the rear. A weathervane is positioned to the right.

The main front has cambered voussoir lintels with keystones, 16-pane sash windows on the first floor, and tripartite sashes below. The top right and bottom left windows are blocked. The entrance is offset to the right of centre, featuring a bracketed hood, fluted pilasters, and a modern door. There are also four-pane horned sash windows at the right end.

On the Oxford Road front, small pane sash windows have been altered on the first floor, with no right-hand window present. The central entrance has a bracketed hood and double doors. Inside the cross range, there are features from the 17th-century building, which is believed to have upper cruck construction, although there is insufficient visible evidence now. The first floor is mostly open to the original A-frame roof trusses, with the front pitch raised in the 19th century, and cambered tie beams. Cross beams in the bar area have panelled encasing.
