Description
39 Lion Street is a two-storey building with a three-window front made of coursed rubble, topped with a slate roof that features a skylight on the right and brick chimney stacks at each end. The first floor has 12-pane sash windows with voussoir lintels; the right-hand window is blocked, while the other two have holders for window boxes. The central shop window is designed with a cornice and end pilasters, flanked by a boarded door on the left that leads into a cross passage, and a recessed entrance on the right with a four-panel half-glazed door, panelled reveals, and pilasters. The shop window has similar pilasters that wrap around the corner. There are two additional sash windows, matching those on the front, located on the right end.
At the rear, there is an attached rubble cross range that extends down Brook Street. The southern end of this range is domestic and features small pane sash windows. Further along, there is a three-storey warehouse built into the slope, which has an undulating slate roof and three tiers of boarded doors, the top one having a swept roof. There is a louvred ventilator and various camber-headed openings. A broad recessed entrance is located at the right end with one brick jamb. Additionally, there is a lower two-storey range with a corrugated roof attached at the end, and the rubble cross range extends into a large courtyard created between this property and The Limited Bookshop.
