Description

The Old Post Office is a 2-storey building made of rubble construction, topped with an old slate roof. It features plain end chimneys with weathercoursing and capping. The shop section is located on the right and has a late 19th-century shop front, which includes a central boarded door flanked by two-pane shop windows. These windows are supported by outer panelled pilasters and topped with a narrow fascia and moulded cornice. Above the shop front, there is a contemporary four-pane sash window that is off-centre to the right.

To the left of the shop section is a one-window cottage section that has a four-panel Victorian door. This section also features windows on both floors that match those of the shop. An earlier blocked entrance can be seen on the right, with a blocked window above it. There is an additional window in the attic, which is set within a catslide dormer that has slated cheeks.

The building has lean-to extensions on both the right and left sides. The left lean-to has a boarded door with a wooden doorframe and a large stone lintel; this was formerly a cart entrance that was reduced in size in the late 19th century, with a small section of cobbles visible in front. The left lean-to also has a corrugated iron roof and is angled gently to follow the curve of the road. There is a 19th-century window in the former entrance opening and a two-pane casement window to the left. A modern door provides access to the eastern entrance.

The rear of the building is excavated out of the rock and features an upper boarded door with a four-pane window to the left and a casement window to the right. There are modern windows on the far left and in the basement.

Inside, the shop section retains its late 19th-century plain built-in shelving around the walls.
