Description
Awelon is an L-shaped vernacular two-storey house, likely built in the second quarter of the 18th century, with early 19th-century alterations and additions that create a T-plan layout. The building is constructed of rubble and features a modern tiled roof with tall chimneys, including two end-chimneys and a lateral chimney on the south arm, all with moulded capping and weather coursing. The south range has a hipped roof and early 19th-century 12-pane sash windows on both the ground and first floors, with similar windows on the recessed east wing.
The entrance is located in the west wing, accessed through a modern conservatory, featuring a 12-pane glazed door with a modern window above. On the west wall of the south wing, where a primary window would typically be, there is a 9-pane glazed door with a small recessed 12-pane sash window above it. To the left of the lateral chimney, there is a small boarded cellar door with horizontal ventilation slits. At the rear, there is a catslide extension with a modern upper dormer entrance to the left, a 4-pane leaded door, and slate bridge access to a banked garden. To the left, there is a lower basement court with a modern tool-shed lean-to and stepped access from the garden, along with a modern door and leaded window.
Inside, the entrance hall features a slate floor, and there is a plain early 19th-century straight-flight stair with stick balusters. The main rooms have wide, original oak floorboards, and there are two 18th-century 2-panel painted doors with raised and fielded panels.
