Description

The Coach House and Stable Block at Tan Llan is an early 18th-century stable block, built around 1728 to serve the Tan Llan estate. It was altered in the late 19th century and extended to include a coach house. The structure is made of small hand-made bricks sitting on a rubble plinth, topped with a slate roof.

The stable section features a central entrance with a boarded door and a timber lintel, flanked by windows that have four-pane casements. Above the door, there is a wooden shuttered window, although the brickwork around it shows some disturbance. To the right, there is a 19th-century rubble lean-to that has a boarded door with a brick cambered head. To the left, the later rubble coach house includes modern rubble infill, tripartite windows, and boarding above.

A large 19th-century slate-hung hipped dormer is present on the roof, featuring a 12-pane sash window, with a plain 19th-century chimney on the left gable. There is also a small gabled extension set back to the left, which has a boarded door and a three-light 20th-century window. At the rear, stone steps lead to an upper 19th-century dormer entrance with a boarded door, and a dormer window similar to the one on the left. The rear of the building is set against a steep bank and is constructed of rubble.

The stable block consists of three bays for the stable section and one bay for the coach house, supported by queen post roof trusses.
