Description
Tan-y-lan is an end-entry farmhouse dating from the 18th century, constructed of limewashed rubble masonry and topped with a corrugated asbestos sheet roof, which was likely originally covered with stone tiles. The end stack has been rebuilt in brick. A single-storey wing extends westward from the west wall of the house, made of larger masonry blocks, featuring a slate roof and a masonry gable stack.
The entrance is located on the right side of the south gable end, consisting of a planked door set beneath a wooden lintel. The east wall of the house features a wide 8-pane sash window in the center, also under a timber lintel. Above this window is a raking half dormer with a wooden 2-light casement window. To the right of the sash window is a small 2-light casement window with a stone dripmould above it, and all windows have stone sills. The north gable end has a wood-framed window in the gable, also under a stone dripmould, with a 2-light casement window below, offset to the right. The west wall contains a blocked doorway next to the wing, with a 20th-century window frame to its right and a small 2-light casement window above, offset to the left. There is also a small brick lean-to with a corrugated asbestos sheet roof towards the right of the wall. The wing has a doorway and window opening on its south side.
Inside, the hall is situated to the south, with service rooms to the north. The masonry fireplace at the south end has been rebuilt or refaced in the mid-20th century. To the left of the fireplace is the entrance, with stairs to the right leading to the fireplace. The living room features narrow chamfered cross beams, and the floor is currently made of earth. The wing includes a cast iron fireplace and a wash basin at the west end.
