Description

Hendreforwydd is a farmhouse comprising a main range facing south and a lower range situated downhill to the north, both being two-storey structures. The farmhouse is constructed of rubble stone with slate roofs, featuring three later white brick stacks: one at each end of the south range and one at the north end of the north range. The front (east) wall is rendered. A single-storey lean-to dairy is attached to the rear with a stone-tiled roof. Adjoining the kitchen gable is a lower two-storey outbuilding which was likely a cart shed and hay loft, and beyond this is a single-storey cow-house also with a stone-tiled roof.

The front elevation features a twentieth-century wood planked door in the original cross passage entrance. The main range has a two-window frontage. The upper storey contains a two-light casement window on the left and a four-pane sash window on the right. The lower storey incorporates a six-pane sash window on the left and a four-pane window with a square hood-mould on the right. To the right of the front door is an inserted twentieth-century metal framed window, with two similar windows in the upper storey. The cart shed to the right has a wide doorway with a substantial timber lintel and dressed reveals. On the left side, stone steps lead up to planked doors at first-floor level. Further to the right, the small cow-house has a wide doorway. The rear (west) elevation has a four-pane sash window to the hall and a small wooden two-light casement stair light. One skylight is present in the roof pitch. In the kitchen range, an inserted doorway with a planked door is visible, above which sits a two-light casement iron pane window. The rear of the cart shed has a ground-level door opening and a loft hatch above. The south gable end of the house has no openings.

The main range retains its original plan form, with a hall and inner rooms separated by a post and panel partition. The hall has doors on each side under carved segmental heads, leading into the inner room (which is no longer divided). The hall’s chamfered cross beams feature cut stops. The stone fireplace is under a massive lintel without chamfer and incorporates a bakeoven to the right; stone stairs are located to the left of the chimney. A door to the former cross passage is positioned to the right of the chimney. Behind the chimney and within the lean-to is the dairy, which has a flagstone floor with stone salting slabs.
