Description

The Former Saw Mills is a Grade II listed building consisting of three adjoining parallel ranges, all single storey. It is built from snecked masonry with stone dressings and features slate roofs with moulded barge boards. The building is notable for its wide doorways that are set under segmental arches with voussoirs, typically fitted with double planked doors. Tall cast iron windows with flat stone lintels and sills are present, featuring 24 panes with opening lights. The north and south walls have three spans, and each gable includes an oculus with radial glazing. The arrangement of doors and windows is irregular; the gable ends of the west range each have two doorways, while the other gable ends feature one doorway and either one or two windows. The east wall has double doors to the left, followed by five windows, a door, and then three additional windows. The west side has a roughly central boarded doorway, and to the left, there is a very wide full-height opening with sliding corrugated iron doors, beyond which are two windows.

Inside, the central range is completely open and consists of 12 bays supported by simple queen post trusses. The concrete floor shows impressions for machine bases, and there is a bearing box attached to the south end of the east wall, indicated by oil stains. The west wall has been partially cut away and replaced with cast iron columns and beams, along with brick jambs. Iron rails run east-west through the west range, facing the wide external entrance with sliding doors. The north and south ends of this range are partitioned off by stone walls and were not accessed. The east range is divided and primarily used as workshops; the north half contains two rooms, at least one of which was previously converted into an office. The south half has a north-south partition wall with a loft above.
