Description

Cockcroft House, formerly the Hay Union Workhouse, has been converted into housing. It features a standard grid plan with transverse and spinal ranges connected by a central octagonal block. The building has a classical 8-bay freestone front, with extensions at either end. The central two bays are advanced and gabled, displaying a plaque that reads "H U 1837." There is a cill band and a rusticated bull-nosed plinth. The slate roof has cresting and wide eaves supported by brackets at the gable. Small pane sash windows, all replaced, have voussoir lintels; one window on the right has been converted into a doorway, while the center has had the opposite change. Bracket cornices adorn the central doorways.

To the left, there is a two-storey modern extension (No.1) with the upper floor set back and implied blocked windows. The right-hand extension, slightly set back, features sash windows with cement render. Rubble-walled courtyards to the north and south have been significantly modernized, with casement windows and lintels. The three-storey octagon has 4-light pivot windows in the flanking north and south ranges, along with brick chimney stacks, one of which is particularly tall. A single-storey range extends east from the octagon, showcasing similar details, and includes louvred gablet dormers, as well as a lower attached hipped roof range at the northeast.
