Description
Whitehill House is a workhouse built in 1837, now converted into housing. It features a brick construction with a hipped slate roof and has a double H-plan layout with a central range that runs north-east to south-west. The central block is three storeys tall, while the other sections are two storeys. The south-west front has two storeys and is arranged with three plus two plus three windows, all of which are 9-pane sashes set under rubbed brick heads. The central part of the facade is slightly advanced and topped with a modillioned pediment. There is a band above the ground floor, which features glazing bar sashes also under rubbed brick heads.
There are two entrances located at each corner of the advanced centre, each covered by dentilled stone canopies, with doors that are set in slight recesses and are ledged and boarded. The central block is flanked by single-storey ranges with diagonal walls that have windows in the angles. The south-west gable includes a blind lunette window. The rear cross-wing has gable-end stacks and segmentally headed glazing bar sashes. Whitehill House is a well-preserved example of a country workhouse, with very few later alterations.
