Description
Barclay's Bank House is a Georgian building that is three stories high and features a symmetrical five-window front made of scribed render. The facade includes a plinth, end pilasters, and a band course above the first floor. It has a hipped slate roof with bracket eaves and modern brick chimney stacks at both ends. The sash windows have moulded architraves, with six panes on the second floor and twelve panes below, both adorned with fluted keystones. A central porch supported by Tuscan columns leads to an arched entrance, which features an architrave, a recessed six-panel door, and a Gothic fanlight. There is a cellar opening on the left side. The rear of the building is finished in pebbledash and has horned small pane sashes with cement lintels. The bracket eaves extend around the roughcast left side.
Internally, the right side of the house is partially occupied by Barclay's Bank, which purchased the property in 1853. The private residence retains an entrance hall with a stairwell accessed through a segmental arch. The oak staircase features a string, turned balusters, and a swept-up handrail, with a later balustrade leading to the second-floor landing. The main room on the first floor spans three bays and showcases an Adamesque cornice with egg and dart motifs and foliage trails. The interior also includes panelled doors and Victorian chimney pieces. The roof construction is eccentric, featuring a queen post and subsidiary struts, along with stone steps leading down to the cellar.
