Description

Towy Works is a builders merchants premises built in a stripped modern style. It features a white-painted render, flat roof, and iron rail. The building has three storeys and a basement, with six bays; the sixth bay on the right is half-width, and there are also narrow blank bays at each end. The bays are separated by piers, with a double band on the first floor and a cornice on the second floor that is broken forward over the piers. There is a double band between the upper floors, and the parapet is divided by flat-capped piers. The ground floor sill band is also broken forward over the piers.

The upper floors have pairs of sash windows, while the ground floor features a large square shop window. The sashes have small panes only in the top sash. The shop windows are divided into four sections by a thin mullion and transom. The sixth bay has one sash window on each floor and a narrow shop window. There are basement entries under the left two bays, and large lettered panels are present in the parapet and between the double bands over the first and ground floors, originally enamelled metal but now replaced with plastic.

The main entry is located in the one-bay east end wall, which has matching angle piers, though the openings are at different levels to light the stairs, and the parapet curves up over a plaque that reads "Towy Works Limited." The entrance features broad double doors with pilaster sides and a framed plaque above. The first floor has a short three-light window in a moulded shouldered surround, and a large upper three-light window with top-lights in a similar surround, with lettered panels over each level.

To the left, there is a 1920 extension designed in a modernist style, consisting of three storeys and a five-window range, with large windows that have small-paned glazing and plain piers in between. The ground floor has a later double-bay entry to the left.

Inside, the front entrance hall features a timber open-well staircase with a closed string, turned balusters, and large turned newels with ball finials. The main showrooms have boarded ceilings.
