Description
23 Bridge Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. It is two storeys high, with a cellar and attic, and features a stucco exterior and close-eaved slate roofs. The building has two facades, with the main one facing east.
The east front includes three large gabled dormers that were added in the late 20th century, each with 12-pane hornless sash windows. The first floor and ground floor have three 12-pane hornless sash windows, and the ground floor also features a late 20th-century imitation of an earlier 19th-century shopfront. This includes a large 20-pane window on the left with a cellar entry below that is protected by an iron grille, and on the right, a recessed doorway with a contemporary half-glazed panelled double door next to a square bay window with a 4-16-4 pane configuration, which previously had boarded doors to the cellar. There is a narrow fascia with dentils beneath a minimal cornice.
The west rear elevation is also two storeys high and has a basement, with two bays. It has windows on the right side at a higher level that light the stairway. There is one dormer in the attic on the left side. The right side has a 12-pane hornless sash window at intermediate levels above the ground and first floors, along with a basement light below. The left side features a 12-pane sash window on the first and ground floors, and a recessed contemporary door that is accessed by three steps, located just to the right of the ground floor window.
The interior was altered after 1981, when a staircase from the 18th century with turned balusters, panelling on the staircase wall, raised and fielded panelled partitions, and raised and fielded panelled doors were present. The cellar was not inspected at that time. During the most recent survey, none of the timber features were visible, and two heavy beams on the ground floor appeared to be reused. The upper floors were not available for inspection, and the staircase at the rear has been replaced.
