Description

The Cafe on the Square is a shop and cafe dating from the 19th century, featuring painted stucco and a hipped slate roof. It is a two-storey building with an attic and basement. The front elevation has a two-storey plate glass design, with the glazing updated in the later 20th century. A large gabled dormer with slate cheeks includes a prominent semi-circular headed plate window in the center, flanked by smaller cambered-headed lights. The first floor showcases three large plate windows that span the entire front, with side windows each containing three small opening lights at the top. The ground floor has a similar three-bay shop front, complete with a recessed glazed door on the left. Above each floor, there is a painted fascia, with the upper one framed by triple consoles at either end. Each narrow bay beside the glazed front features applied timber decoration, including an arched panel on each floor with a square panel below. The building has channelled stucco angle piers.

On the left end wall, there is a three-light 20th-century shop window on the ground floor, accompanied by a fascia and cornice. A channelled pier is located at the rear corner. The rear southwest wing includes a southeast lower outbuilding that is gable-ended to Bridge Street, constructed of whitewashed rubble with a curved angle. This section has a blank window with a brick surround and a blank pointed doorway with a brick head, along with an outshut on the side wall.

The cellar walls are made of whitewashed rubble stone, which also extends to the outer side walls of the main building. The ceilings are supported by pine joists.
