Description
2 Quay Street is a terraced house dating from the 18th century, constructed of painted brick with a slate deep-eaved roof featuring a heavy moulded eaves cornice and large modillions. The house has a shared stuccoed stack on the left side. It is two storeys with an attic and was originally designed as a five-window range similar to Nos. 3 and 10, but the first floor has been altered to three windows, with only the centre opening remaining original. There are two small 16-pane sash dormers with sloping slate roofs and slate cheeks. The upper floor features renewed 12-pane sashes in the outer bays and a 24-pane sash in the centre, all with thick glazing bars, suggesting they may be original with early glass.
On the ground floor, there are two renewed 12-pane sashes flanking a central doorway, along with two cellar openings that have 6-pane sashes and exterior bars to the left of the doorway, while one to the right is boarded. Four slate steps lead up to a six-panel door, which has the top two panels glazed and diagonal planking on the rear face. Above the door, there is a renewed flat hood supported by original carved and scrolled trusses. The openings feature brick voussoirs, and there is a raised three-course brick band between the floors, with a moulded lower course and a painted rubble stone flush plinth.
The interior has been largely renewed in the late 20th century, featuring a wide 18th-century staircase with four flights, pulvinated turned balusters, and square newels, which have also been largely renewed, sharing a pair with the staircase in No. 3. Most doors have been renewed, though there is one two-panel fielded-panelled door on the first floor. The ground floor left room includes a late 19th-century fireplace and grate.
