Description

31 Quay Street is a town house that is attached but set slightly back from No. 30. It features unpainted roughcast walls, a close-eaved slate roof, and red brick end stacks. The building is three storeys high and was originally designed with a two-window range, though the second floor has been altered or added, now featuring four square six-pane sash windows with heads at eaves level. The first and ground floors each have two tall narrow 12-pane sash windows, and the doorway is located at the far left, accessed by three steps. The entrance is framed by a fine timber doorcase with narrow panelled pilasters and an open pediment that has a panelled soffit on console brackets, leading to a fielded-panelled eight-panel door. The house has a raised plinth and includes a basement.

Inside, the front right room has a plastered beam, a six-panel door with fielded panels, and an Adam-style fireplace with festoon decoration. The rear right room features a fireplace with a fluted frieze that is broken forward at the centre and a plastered ceiling beam. The staircase, dating from the mid to later 18th century, has a closed pulvinated string, square newels, turned balusters, and a moulded handrail. It consists of four flights up and one flight down to the basement, with stick balusters and in-and-out plank panels under the first flight.
