Description
3 St Mary's Street is a terraced town house featuring an unpainted stucco front, a modillion eaves cornice, and hornless sash windows. The slate gabled roof is complemented by a red brick chimney stack. This house is part of an unusual three-storey and basement pair, with three bays on the upper floors and five bays on the ground floor. The upper floor has hornless sash windows with nine panes, while the main floors have twelve-pane windows. The two doorways are aligned with the outer windows of the upper floors, and the ground floor has an additional outer window on each side, creating an alternating pattern of three windows and two doors. The doors have been renewed and consist of six panels with fanlights and radial glazing bars, set in renewed open-pedimented doorcases that feature pilasters, plinths, and console brackets. The windows are set on stone sills, and there are basement openings beneath the outer windows, which are protected by late 20th-century replacement iron railings.
Inside, the door opens into a hall that has reeded borders on two ceilings, with an inner door featuring a fanlight in between. The room to the right has panelled shutters, while a panelled door to the left leads into the centre room, which is part of No 4. The staircase, positioned at right angles to the rear, has stick balusters, a continuous moulded rail, and scrolled tread ends. Six-panel doors with planted mouldings are present throughout. An arched window between the front room and the stairs features coloured glass margins.
