Description

The former monastery and clergy house at the Catholic Church of St Mary is constructed from coursed dressed rubble stone with ashlar dressings and a plinth. It features a slate roof with overhanging eaves, decorative ridge tiles, and ridge stacks. The building has a wide, three-storey main block facing southeast with four bays. This block includes tripartite windows, 24-pane transom gabled dormers with flat heads, and 24-pane casement windows with relieving arches on the ground and first floors.

The entrance is located on the southwest side, featuring a two-bay design with a pointed door to the left, a 16-pane window above, and a square 12-pane window on the second floor. To the right, there are similar windows on the ground and first floors, along with a pointed trefoil in the gable.

At the rear left, there is a 2½ storey wing that connects to the church, featuring a cat-slide roof at the ground floor. This wing has a wide gabled 18-light dormer and a similar window below with leaded lights, along with a ground floor window to the left. The building is attached to a buttressed stone extension from the church.

The northwest elevation includes various openings, all with yellow brick dressings, and a rear wing with a ground floor window. The main block has two windows on the ground floor and four on the first floor, with the center windows being smaller. There is a single window on the second floor with a fire escape stair attached. The northeast elevation has two 16-pane windows on the second floor, along with a single-storey extension featuring a gable stack and window, a 24-pane window to the southeast, and an additional lean-to.

The building has an axial plan with a corridor running across the rear of the main block, repeated on each floor. There is a straight flight stair at the northeast end, which is a later addition. Rooms are located to the southeast of the corridor, with a chapel situated on the first floor of the rear wing.
